WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 13TH , 2017,
ST PETE YACHT CLUB, WATERFRONT ROOM
11 CENTRAL AVENUE ST PETERSBURG, FL. 33701
8:30 – 10:00 AM

Happy Sunday Angels, This is a friendly reminder to all of you to make sure you RSVP if you are planning to attend our Annual Angel Christmas Celebration December 13th 2017. The details are above.

Since this is not our usual Angel Meeting held at our usual venue, it is very important that we get an exact headcount since we are charged per person for this event. If you plan on attending, please make sure I know how many will be coming if more than yourself.

If you adopted a child or a family, please try to come by 8:00 am so we can get the room set up and the gifts organized by Agency since we are working with several of our community partners and there will be a lot of gifts to distribute.

Please make sure each gift has their name attached on the gift and if possible in one bag per child to keep them together so the gifts do not get mixed up.

If you are one of the community partners that we are providing gifts to, please make sure you bring large vehicles since there are a lot of gifts to be taken from the Yacht Club.

If you rsvp and are unable to attend, please make sure you let me know as soon as possible so I can adjust the headcount.

I know that many of you have already replied with your rsvp when the first email went, but I really need an accurate headcount for the Yacht Club, so if you do not mind, if you could just rsvp again, it would be very appreciated! please make sure that your rsvp includes any additional names of guests that will be attending by this coming Friday, December 8th 2017.

Thank you and we look forward to sharing this amazing event with you!

Sandy Kearney

Gas Cards Make a Difference in the Life of a Child!
Thank Yous, Quotes, and Other Stories 2017

George is the GAL for 3 cases-a total of 7 children. Most of the children for whom he advocates are located in Sarasota County. Because of the contentious nature of the case and wanting to develop a good working relationship with the children and their caregivers, George visits the children personally and couldn’t have done it without gas card support. The face to face contact has built trust between the children, their caregivers, and the Guardian. It has also allowed the Guardian to develop a better understanding and perspective of the concerns expressed in this case. The benefits of the gas cards has been invaluable!

Paul Lambis has been a GAL since 2011 and currently has 4 cases with 3 children in Tampa, one in Zephyrhills, one in St Petersburg, 2 in Largo, 2 in Pinellas Park and 1 boy in Clearwater. Paul not only visits each child monthly, he goes to see them at school, brings the children to summer camp, court, and attends staffings. Paul also uses the gas cards to help provide normalcy for his GAL children by bringing them to attend special activities like bowling, Mad Hatter, the Grand Prix, and movies.

Kristine is a Dade City volunteer who has an infant case placed in St. Petersburg and a teen boy who is placed in Clearwater. Colby (the teen) is autistic and often struggles in his group home placement. Gas cards have helped Kristine go above and beyond for Colby to ensure someone at the group home knows she is watching as he is easily targeted. Kristine also has used this support to take Colby to places including the St Pete Clearwater Airport (he loves planes), the Florida Air Museum, the Henry Willaford Train Museum and the Rush Truck Center. Gas cards are an important tool for GALs to do their work-thank you!

Tanya just recently became a Guardian ad Litem volunteer. Although she lives in St. Petersburg, she accepted a case where the teenager is placed in a group home in Tampa. She accepted the case and by the first week she scheduled a visit and the child was not at the group home when he was supposed to be. She tried again the next day where she was able to visit with the child and help get up to speed on his case and his needs. Tanya says thank you for helping ease the frustration of long trips so she can visit the child she chose to serve!

I travel to visit kids living in Tarpon Springs from St Pete on a weekly basis. I recently drove to Lake Mary near Orlando to visit a prospective caregiver before changing a child’s placement. The gas card helps LOTS!!!! – Thank you from Collette Burgess

Jill has been a GAL since 2012 and has had about 6 cases-some with multiple kids in different placements. She was very excited and grateful to receive the gas cards during a tough time in her case. She sent the following email: “I wanted to sincerely thank you for the gas cards you sent to me. In 5 years, I have never received anything like that. I am so grateful!”

Thanks so much for the gas cards! Each visit to the kids in foster care is 37 miles round-trip, and in addition to the monthly visits, I’ve been observing visitations for both parents as well. The gas cards help defray the cost considerably. Appreciate it greatly, Dana

I wanted to thank you for the gas cards I have received over the past months to use with the current case I have. A round trip to the home or the school is about 60 -75 miles at a time. As a volunteer, I know I assume the expenses that come with the position but with a case as far away as mine, it provided me the opportunity to make a few extra trips a month. Thanks again for the support. Charles L. Derexson

Thank you so much for the gas cards. It has been difficult having my teen placed out of Pinellas County. The gas cards have been most appreciated especially since we have been able to track down my teen’s father who is incarcerated beyond even Hillsborough County. Without the financial help, it would have been an extreme hardship to have driven across several counties to make her dreams come true. Best Regards, Jennifer

I never thought having a bus pass would be a big deal. Taking the bus shouldn’t be a big deal right. Well when you’re trying to go to school and work it helps to have that pass that allows you to ride for free. I thank Ready for Life for providing myself and are youth with the ability to get to point “A” to point “B”. if I didn’t have transportation or had to dig into my pockets all the time for uber I wouldn’t be anywhere. The Bus passes have been an amazing commodity a necessity at times.

Sincerely yours,
Sa’Quan Ward

Words cant describe how much the the Upass program has helped me! Last year I remember feeling stuck and hopeless because I couldn’t obtain employment but the root of not obtaining a job was not having a way to get there. I was facing many struggles like not having transportation, not having a job and not having daycare to keep a job. I couldn’t have have one without the other. Once I heard that the bus pass program was put in place at Ready for life it was a relief! I was able to at least get around to job hunt once I secured daycare. I got a job within a month and have been working ever since. The bus pass gives me a piece of mind and allows me to be more independent and responsible. I’m on the bus from sun up to sun down in order to get my daughter to daycare and then to work. I have been able to keep my job longer than I normally would if I didn’t have reliable transportation. Also my daughter was sick on a few ocassions and If it wasn’t for the bus pass Im not sure how quick I would have been able to get her to the emergency room twice in 3 days. The burden of not having a way to get around has been lifted off of my shoulders! I’m so grateful and thank you.

Child Advocacy Expo

LET’S STAY CONNECTED!!!

THANK YOU COMMUNITY PARTNERS
our
9th Annual Child Advocacy Expo
WAS A HUGE SUCCESS

October 6th, 2017 marked our 9th year of hosting our Annual Child Advocacy Expo. We apologize for our tardiness in thanking all of our participants, but the Angels have been busy bees this year, but we wanted to give you a quick recap of the success of this event.

We want to thank the St Pete College Seminole Campus for allowing us to host our Expo at their campus. It was the perfect venue for our group and there was so much interaction and networking going on that you could feel the energy when you walked through the doors.

The Angels would like to say a special “Thank You” to Brandi Lazzaris, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, CPI Division for being our guest speaker and Amy Foster, Guardian ad Litem Foundation, for getting the Speed Networking up and running. Both these individuals are experts in their fields and they helped make this year’s Expo the success that it was. Thank you to our special angels, our Expo Chair, Nicole Spinelli and Kim Bauer for working this event.

We apologize for the inconvenience for the road construction which hopefully will not be an issue next year.

By popular demand, all hands raised when the question was raised to keep this event going next year which was music to our ears. The Angels feel this event is such a benefit for our Community Partners and each of us walk away with more knowledge than we walked in with. Thank you for wanting to keep this event.

Thanks to all of you who participated at the Expo with your commitment to work with us in the coming year to build this event and double our attendance. As we discussed at the Expo, we would like to add funding resources and students who are interested in getting in the field of social services to be included in this event. We feel this is the perfect venue and event to allow these potential donors and student to meet the resources in our area and have one on one introductions to learn more about who they are and what they do.

For those of you that were unable to attend, we will hold this event again in 2018 at the same venue in the month of October. As soon as we have a set date that is determined by the College, we will send out an email blast so everyone can mark their calendars.

Many of you have requested being added to our Angel Distribution List to stay in the loop of Angel News. We take that as a wonderful compliment so each of you will be receiving emails monthly from the Angels so everyone knows what we are doing. Anyone who wants to attend our Monthly Angel Meetings, please feel free to attend. We would welcome you not only as a guest, but an Angel Member and would ask that when you do attend, you let us know what you do.

If there are any changes to your contact information or your website, please notify me immediately so we can keep our website accurate at all times. If there is news that you would like for us to add to our newsletter, please contact me and I will be sure to include upcoming events in our Newsletters.

Our next Angel Meeting is November 14th, 2017 at our regular meeting location, Pasadena Community Chuch, Life Enrichment Center, 227 70th Street South, St Petersburg, FL. at the below email address if you would like to attend.

THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS FOR PARTICIPATING IN OUR 9TH ANNUAL EXPO. IT WAS A HUGE SUCCESS

This year’s Child Advocacy Expo hosted by Angels Against Abuse was a HUGE Success with some amazing energy in the room. The St Pete College, Seminole Campus was the perfect venue for this event. Brandi Lazaris, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, CPI Division was our Guest Speaker and gave a wonderful message to every person sitting in the room. Amy Foster, Guardian ad Litem Foundation, opened the program with the Speed Networking which was an awesome way to keep the energy flowing. In fact, there was so much energy and networking with all of our community partners that you felt proud to be there to share all that you do with others. From the beginning to the end, it was AWESOME. By popular demand, our group of partners have requested we have our 10th Child Advocacy same place, same month in 2018. In 2018, we will do things just a little different. We will be including organizations and businesses who fund our non-profits so they will have an opportunity to meet and greet personally with the many resources in our area, and we will also open up this event to bring in students who are looking for a career in the field of social services. This will widen the benefit of this event and allow our community to come together to make even more of a difference. Thank you to all of our Community Partners for your support and participation.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
FOR ANOTHER AMAZING MAD HATTER TEA PARTY!

The 9th Annual Child Advocacy Expo is Friday, October 6th 2017
PLEASE REGISTER TODAY IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY

This event has been a popular event for the last 8 years and our attendance is low this year! We realize that having three major hurricanes knocking at our door gave us quite a challenge in the month of September, but as we get life back to normal, we want to extend this invitation to our community partners to try to make this valuable networking event. Please help us get the word out since this event is this Friday! We will announce during this year’s Expo, the 2018 date so everyone can get it on their calendars. We will also be asking your support to get other agencies that have not attended in the past to get involved. There is nothing more beneficial than TEAM WORK and especially when it deals with children and youth. When we all pool our resources and work together, the impact is much greater and we can accomplish more together than apart! The Angels need your SUPPORT.

For those that will be participating this Friday, please note that there will be NO assigned tables like past years and NO passport. Instead, to make it easy on everyone, when you check in, just find an empty table for all your material to setup. Every table will have one ticket already on the table when you arrive which will be used for the $500 donation drawing from Angels Against Abuse. So hang on to that ticket in case you are the lucky winner! Please note…
ONLY participants representing their agency is eligible for the drawing.

We look forward to seeing you this Friday.

Any questions email Sandy Kearney at

Thank you

THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR WONDERFUL VOLUNTEERS FOR MAKING
THE MAD HATTER TEA PARTY
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL EVENT!

September 23rd, 2017 was another spectacular day for the hundreds of children who ran through the Rabbit Hole to a magical event, our famous Mad Hatter Tea Party. It was another goose bump moment for all of us who participated and had a chance to experience the smiles on the faces of the children who often have little to smile about! This could not have happened without the many volunteers who showed up to make everything perfect. I would like to personally thank Kathy Mitcheson for her tireless energy in chairing this event for so many years. Also, Christina Wyckoff returned this year and helped to make all the details fall into place perfectly. A BIG thank you to our Volunteer Coordinator Jennifer McGarry who made sure everyone knew what they were doing and made sure they were doing what they were assigned to do. There were so many wonderful volunteers and kids helping kids, like Admiral Farragut and The Kind Mouse, and Bella’s School and so many more.

What WONDERFUL NEWS to hear at the event that the Sunshine Kiwanis Club of St Petersburg announcing that they will be taking over this event as we move forward. Thank you so much Allen Yergovich for making this happen, and also thank you so much for Sunshine Kiwanis giving us years of Hat Making fun for the hundreds of kids who attend this event. It is one of our most popular activities that you have provided for so many years. When the announcement was made that they will keep our Mad Hatter going for the hundreds of children that look forward to this event every year, there was a lot of cheering and clapping from all of our guests who look forward to this event every year. This is such a gift to the Angels, and a HUGE compliment that Kiwanis feels this event provides such an impact on these children that they believe in it enough to keep it going! ALL the Angels will be there for whatever you need to volunteer our services. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

WHAT A BIRTHDAY WISH COME TRUE FOR ME! On my Birthday, September 23rd, my last day as the Mad Hatter! It was a bitter sweet moment for me, to pass the baton to a new Mad Hatter, we don’t know who yet, but have some ideas cooking. It was an amazing Birthday Gift for me as I bid my farewell as the Crazy Mad Hatter!! . Thank you for the honor to bring smiles to these little ones and create memories for years to come. Best of all, It is not over for the next Mad Hatter…

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU BJ’S RESTAURANT
The food was perfect for the kids, BEST Ever!

Thank you Jennifer McGarry for making this happen!

THE MAD HATTER TEA PARTY 2017!
MARK YOUR CALENDAR TO PUT A SMILE ON YOUR FACE
AND JOY IN YOUR HEART!
SEPTEMBER 23RD 2017
DOWNTOWN ST PETERSBUG COLISEUM
2-5 PM

It is not too late to sponsor an activity or a child. The match is still going on and as of this writing, we have received $1150 and with the Angel Match, the total is $2300. This event has been a huge success over the past six years and has brought a lot of joy and smiles to the children who have attended this event. These children often have something to smile about, BUT for this one amazing afternoon, every September, they can forget their tough times and have the opportunity to make memories, to laugh, sing, dance, eat, enjoy activities and interact with 9 amazing characters. This is a day designed just for them, and this is what the Angels call our “Goose Bump Day”!

Since this is year is our final Mad Hatter Tea Party, we want to make sure that these children have an opportunity to enjoy this magical experience. We rely on our Community Partners to make sure we get some new faces and fill this huge room with children anxious to see what we have in store for them. For those community partners that we are working with to fill the tables, please make sure you email me with your table count no later than Friday, September 8th. PLEASE note that we are asking every agency who will be participating at this event to have a representative from your agency in attendance to make sure they help with the children and families they have selected to attend so we can make sure everything runs smoothly. Although it is too early to share, we may have some good news to share in the next few months which may impact future Mad Hatter Tea Parties, but right now it is premature.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU BJ’S RESTAURANT

The Angels would like to give a BIG Shout Out to BJ’s Restaurant!

We just learned on Thursday, August 31st, that BJ’s Restaurant will be providing all the food, drinks and dessert for this event. This is HUGE since this has been one of the bigger expenses incurred in previous years of the Mad Hatter Tea Parties. We met with Andy Giraldo, Senior Manager, BJ’s and he chose a child friendly menu that everyone will enjoy. Andy, from the bottom of our HEARTS, thank you so much for the generosity of BJ’s doing this, and especially thank you for bringing staff to serve the food and help with the event. This is an amazing gift and so appreciated!

Thank you Jennifer McGarry for making this happen! You ROCK…

THE ANGEL CENTER IS OFFICIAL
WE OPENED OUR DOORS AUGUST 14TH 2017
This is the HOPE Room (Infant to 6 years old)

Monday, August 14, 2017, the Angel Center opened its doors for visitations. It was a slow start, but the visitations are beginning to happen. Every child and their parent that is doing their visitations at the Center, walk in with smiles on their faces as soon as they see our Lobby. As the door opens into the Angel Center, they are escorted to their visitation room that is appropriate for their specific age group with toys, games, DVD’s and snack to make their visits more meaningful with their hopes of being reunited with their parents. The walls of every room is decorated with the main characters from the Dolphin Tale Movie, Winter, Hope, Rufus, Mavis and Cooper with careful detail to every room according to their age. The Angels wanted to make sure they paid attention to every detail that we could think of to make these rooms special for our guests and make these visits more worthwhile for both the child and the parent.

Andrea Cowart does our visitation scheduling and so much more to make the rooms ready for the visits. If anyone would like to have a tour of this facility, please contact me below and I will arrange for one around the visits. In order to assure that these rooms are ready between visits, it will be the responsibility of the case managers who supervise the visits, to make sure the rooms are put back in the same condition as they were when they walked into the rooms.

PLEASE CLICK BELOW TO RSVP YOUR ATTENDANCE.

Over a hundred Angels, Friends and Community Partners joined us July 21st, 2017 for our Ribbon Cutting Dedication Ceremony. It was an AWESOME event and if you missed it, please visit our website below and take a peek at our beautiful facility! Everyone who walked through the doors had a smile from the time they walked in until they left. The Angels paid attention to every detail for each of the three rooms to make sure they were perfect when our welcomed guests arrive. The Hope Room is for the infant to six years old, Winter Room, 7 to 12, Rufus Room, 13 to 18 and even a meeting room called Mavis where visiting parents and their children can enjoy a snack or if a meeting is needed, this room is perfect. Since we are sharing this facility with Ready For Life, it is our plan to make this facility a multi-function Center for other Agencies to use for meetings or training. We will officially be opening our doors to visitations starting Monday, August 14th 2017, 9:00 am to 7:00 pm! For scheduling Visitations, contact Andrea Cowart at [email protected] or phone: 727 742-4909

Special Thanks to Al & Susie Bennati for all they have done to help the Angels make their dream a reality, with two very special individuals who loved children and wanted to make a difference, Nick and Kay Catizone! Special thanks to David Yates of Clearwater Marine Aquarium for taking our dream and creating magic in all the rooms! It is AMAZING! Thank you Tyler Rowland for your vision and Jim Durrell for making it happen.

Our next major Angel event is our famous Mad Hatter Tea Party. To sponsor a child is only $25 and the Angels are matching $25 with every sponsor we receive. You still have time to make a difference and put a smile on the faces of these children who often have little to smile about! The clock is ticking because September 23rd is right around the corner. If you are able to meet this challenge, you can write a check payable to Angels Against Abuse, Inc. 5404 Leilani Drive, St Pete Beach, FL 33706 or you can pay via PayPal.
