Dear Community Partners, please note the CORRECTED 2018 EXPO SAVE THE DATE! We put in the right date but the wrong venue. It is the same venue as last year, the St Pete College Seminole Campus, same time 8:30 am to 1:00 pm or longer if need be. We are very excited to grow this event in 2018 and open this amazing networking opportunity to other organizations interested in learning more about one another and students from the St Pete College campuses who are interested in a job opportunity in the many fields available. This is a perfect setting to really make a difference in our community and build on one another for the greater good of the children and families we provide services for. Go Angels for hosting this fantastic event and opportunity. Let’s double our attendance. Please view our website Resource Page and if there are agencies we need to include, let’s get them added!

We want to thank the St Pete College Seminole Campus for allowing the Angels to host our Expo at their Seminole Campus again this year. The 2017 Expo was so successful and we are anticipating an even bigger crowd this year! This was the perfect venue for our group to network with one another and share knowledge as to how to do things better. As soon as you walked through the doors, you could feel the energy and were glad you were a part of this event. By popular demand, all hands raised when the question was raised to keep this event going which was music to our ears. The Angels feel this event is such a benefit for our Community Partners and each of us walk away with more knowledge than we walked in with. Thank you for wanting to keep this event.

Thanks to all of you who participated at the Expo in 2017 each of you committed to working with the Angels in this year to build this event and double our attendance. There is no time like the present to get started. There are many resources that we need to get on-board to attend this event and become part of this networking opportunity.

Please make sure you contact the Angels with any changes in your contact information so we can make sure our information is correct. It is important that our Resource Page be accurate and up-to-date for anyone looking for resources. If each of you can think of new contacts that we need to include in our mailings, please make sure we have them. You can email me directly at [email protected] We have to rely on each of you to keep this information accurate for our users. If there is news that you would like for us to include in our Angel Newsletter, please contact me and I will be sure to include upcoming events in our Newsletters.

Good Morning Angels
Good Bye 2017 Hello 2018

Happy New Year Angels! I hope all of you had a wonderful and blessed Christmas and New Years. It is always so exciting to go into a new year with anticipation of making a difference in the lives of the children and youth we advocate for all year long. Just knowing the impact we are making in their lives makes everything we do more worthwhile! That is why our January Kick-off the Year Angel Meeting is such an important meeting to attend for so many reasons. We will be hearing from our community partners with feedback from our Christmas Giving Program; we will be giving you an update on our upcoming events so everyone can get them in their calendars; we will be kicking off our plans for our April Blue Ribbon Gala and getting our volunteers signed up for our only fundraiser we hold annually; and we want to hear from all of you with any questions or suggestions to make us better and stronger. We are in our 11th year of making a difference in the lives of children and youth, but there is always room for improvement and we want to hear from you!!

I sent out an email blast several weeks ago as a reminder for our January meeting, but I believe that many of you were on vacation during the holidays so this is another reminder to you that our January Angel Meeting is next Tuesday, January 9th, 2018 at our regular meeting location: Pasadena Community Church, Life Enrichment Center, located at 227 70th Street South, St Petersburg, FL. From 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM.

Since the January meeting is always such an informative meeting, we ask that you bring any potential new members that might be interested in becoming an Angel. You can never have too many Angels!!

2017 was a fantastic year for the Angels and let’s keep that momentum going for 2018. It is very exciting to be an Angel and see the Hope and Joy that we give children and youth that we have an opportunity to make a difference in their lives.

See you next Tuesday, Please let me know by Friday, January 5th, 2018 if you plan to attend so I can have the room set up with enough chairs. Please RSVP either way so I don’t pester anyone. That way I know you are reading my emails.

Please check out all the below information and click on appropriate buttons to learn more about upcoming events. If you have any questions, just shoot me an email, [email protected]

Summer Break

December 23rd, 2017

You will not want to miss the January Meeting. You will be hearing feedback from our community partners for our Christmas Giving Program. We have another BIG year ahead and lots to do. Let’s start off the new year with a GREAT attendance. We will be sharing lots of news!

Thank you Mastry Brewery Company, Matthew and Danie Dahm!

The Winter Solstice was a huge success! It was a beautiful event and the weather was perfect from start to finish. Thank you to all the vendors, patrons and Angels for supporting this event that will put smiles on the faces of children and youth in our community who have little to smile about. There were hundreds of amazing gifts donated that were delivered to Directions for Living for Christmas Morning that will put magic in the lives of these children.

WE COULD NOT HAVE DONE THIS WITHOUT YOU!

Special thanks to the following organizations and businesses who participated in hundreds of toys donated to Directions for Living: Mastry Brewery Company, Pure Barr Clearwater, Vitality Wellness Center and Angels Against Abuse Inc

I would like to quote a message from Damia Kelly that will give you a little insight as to what these gifts mean to these children.

On behalf of Directions for Living, thank you for your donations that benefited our agency, Directions for Living, which is part of the Christmas Giving Program of Angels Against Abuse, Inc. My name is Damia Kelly, and I am the Assistant Director of the Largo Center for Directions for Living.

“Another year has come and gone and Angels have yet again outdone themselves with the depth of giving they have provided to our community children during the 2017 holiday season. Their magic dust will be transcended to a magical Christmas morning for hundreds of children on December 25th. Without the Angels theses children would be left wondering if Santa forgot about them. Thank you to every single Angel that made this miracle possible for many children who are facing some of the darkest days of their little lives. While you may not be able to see this magical experience on Christmas morning please no there are many smiling faces and happy hearts because of you.”

Merry Christmas Angels
Have a wonderful and Blessed Christmas and thanks for all you do to make a difference in the lives of the children and youth we advocate for 24/7…

I am truly blessed to have such an amazing team of Angels with such generous hearts.

I will see you next year!

Thank you, Sandy Kearney

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 13TH , 2017,
ST PETE YACHT CLUB, WATERFRONT ROOM
11 CENTRAL AVENUE ST PETERSBURG, FL. 33701
8:30 – 10:00 AM

Happy Sunday Angels, This is a friendly reminder to all of you to make sure you RSVP if you are planning to attend our Annual Angel Christmas Celebration December 13th 2017. The details are above.

Since this is not our usual Angel Meeting held at our usual venue, it is very important that we get an exact headcount since we are charged per person for this event. If you plan on attending, please make sure I know how many will be coming if more than yourself.

If you adopted a child or a family, please try to come by 8:00 am so we can get the room set up and the gifts organized by Agency since we are working with several of our community partners and there will be a lot of gifts to distribute.

Please make sure each gift has their name attached on the gift and if possible in one bag per child to keep them together so the gifts do not get mixed up.

If you are one of the community partners that we are providing gifts to, please make sure you bring large vehicles since there are a lot of gifts to be taken from the Yacht Club.

If you rsvp and are unable to attend, please make sure you let me know as soon as possible so I can adjust the headcount.

I know that many of you have already replied with your rsvp when the first email went, but I really need an accurate headcount for the Yacht Club, so if you do not mind, if you could just rsvp again, it would be very appreciated! please make sure that your rsvp includes any additional names of guests that will be attending by this coming Friday, December 8th 2017.

Gas Cards Make a Difference in the Life of a Child!
Thank Yous, Quotes, and Other Stories 2017

George is the GAL for 3 cases-a total of 7 children. Most of the children for whom he advocates are located in Sarasota County. Because of the contentious nature of the case and wanting to develop a good working relationship with the children and their caregivers, George visits the children personally and couldn’t have done it without gas card support. The face to face contact has built trust between the children, their caregivers, and the Guardian. It has also allowed the Guardian to develop a better understanding and perspective of the concerns expressed in this case. The benefits of the gas cards has been invaluable!

Paul Lambis has been a GAL since 2011 and currently has 4 cases with 3 children in Tampa, one in Zephyrhills, one in St Petersburg, 2 in Largo, 2 in Pinellas Park and 1 boy in Clearwater. Paul not only visits each child monthly, he goes to see them at school, brings the children to summer camp, court, and attends staffings. Paul also uses the gas cards to help provide normalcy for his GAL children by bringing them to attend special activities like bowling, Mad Hatter, the Grand Prix, and movies.

Kristine is a Dade City volunteer who has an infant case placed in St. Petersburg and a teen boy who is placed in Clearwater. Colby (the teen) is autistic and often struggles in his group home placement. Gas cards have helped Kristine go above and beyond for Colby to ensure someone at the group home knows she is watching as he is easily targeted. Kristine also has used this support to take Colby to places including the St Pete Clearwater Airport (he loves planes), the Florida Air Museum, the Henry Willaford Train Museum and the Rush Truck Center. Gas cards are an important tool for GALs to do their work-thank you!

Tanya just recently became a Guardian ad Litem volunteer. Although she lives in St. Petersburg, she accepted a case where the teenager is placed in a group home in Tampa. She accepted the case and by the first week she scheduled a visit and the child was not at the group home when he was supposed to be. She tried again the next day where she was able to visit with the child and help get up to speed on his case and his needs. Tanya says thank you for helping ease the frustration of long trips so she can visit the child she chose to serve!

I travel to visit kids living in Tarpon Springs from St Pete on a weekly basis. I recently drove to Lake Mary near Orlando to visit a prospective caregiver before changing a child’s placement. The gas card helps LOTS!!!! – Thank you from Collette Burgess

Jill has been a GAL since 2012 and has had about 6 cases-some with multiple kids in different placements. She was very excited and grateful to receive the gas cards during a tough time in her case. She sent the following email: “I wanted to sincerely thank you for the gas cards you sent to me. In 5 years, I have never received anything like that. I am so grateful!”

Thanks so much for the gas cards! Each visit to the kids in foster care is 37 miles round-trip, and in addition to the monthly visits, I’ve been observing visitations for both parents as well. The gas cards help defray the cost considerably. Appreciate it greatly, Dana

I wanted to thank you for the gas cards I have received over the past months to use with the current case I have. A round trip to the home or the school is about 60 -75 miles at a time. As a volunteer, I know I assume the expenses that come with the position but with a case as far away as mine, it provided me the opportunity to make a few extra trips a month. Thanks again for the support. Charles L. Derexson

Thank you so much for the gas cards. It has been difficult having my teen placed out of Pinellas County. The gas cards have been most appreciated especially since we have been able to track down my teen’s father who is incarcerated beyond even Hillsborough County. Without the financial help, it would have been an extreme hardship to have driven across several counties to make her dreams come true. Best Regards, Jennifer

I never thought having a bus pass would be a big deal. Taking the bus shouldn’t be a big deal right. Well when you’re trying to go to school and work it helps to have that pass that allows you to ride for free. I thank Ready for Life for providing myself and are youth with the ability to get to point “A” to point “B”. if I didn’t have transportation or had to dig into my pockets all the time for uber I wouldn’t be anywhere. The Bus passes have been an amazing commodity a necessity at times.

Sincerely yours,
Sa’Quan Ward

Words cant describe how much the the Upass program has helped me! Last year I remember feeling stuck and hopeless because I couldn’t obtain employment but the root of not obtaining a job was not having a way to get there. I was facing many struggles like not having transportation, not having a job and not having daycare to keep a job. I couldn’t have have one without the other. Once I heard that the bus pass program was put in place at Ready for life it was a relief! I was able to at least get around to job hunt once I secured daycare. I got a job within a month and have been working ever since. The bus pass gives me a piece of mind and allows me to be more independent and responsible. I’m on the bus from sun up to sun down in order to get my daughter to daycare and then to work. I have been able to keep my job longer than I normally would if I didn’t have reliable transportation. Also my daughter was sick on a few ocassions and If it wasn’t for the bus pass Im not sure how quick I would have been able to get her to the emergency room twice in 3 days. The burden of not having a way to get around has been lifted off of my shoulders! I’m so grateful and thank you.
