TOOLS FOR SUCCESS
SUCCESS STORY

Mariah Pollack was having difficulty in school after COVID she wasn’t getting her work done and her grades had dropped tremendously from an A student to getting D’s. Her mentor, April, and Mariah made a goal for her to get back on the Dean’s list for the 4th quarter. She received all A’s and 1D. When she received the laptop from Angels, it motivated her to get all A’s the first quarter. She received all A’s and was placed on the principal’s honor roll. We are proud of Mariah, she wanted to also Thank the Angels for her laptop.

BABY CAT PROGRAM UPDATE

Baby Cat is definitely making a difference in both Campbell Park Elementary and Kings Highway Elementary. Great strides are being made with these children and their families and lives are being turned around. Moms and Dads are feeling proud of their accomplishments which touches the lives of their children. These little ones are learning how to deal with challenges and obstacles. Families are being stabilized resulting in breaking the pattern of abuse. When you change the direction for one child, it changes lives for generations and this is what we are doing! It has been proven over the last two years that working with troubled children at the pre-k level is how you win the battle of breaking the pattern of abuse. We are beginning to get a lot of recognition at the State level which means we are on our way to making the Baby Cat Program a state-wide model for elementary schools with pre-k programs. We are very proud of our success with this program.

On behalf of Directions for Living, we would like to thank the Angels for all they are doing to help make this happen.

Three feel good feedback stories to share on requests that Angels has funded:

Bradley was removed for the second time. He is now with his grandfather and feeling safe. Although he has never been to camp as his GAL, I felt it would be great for him and make his summer very fun. Bradley had so much fun at camp. The first day he was so tired he could hardly stay awake. They swam every day which he enjoys. His favorite was the field trips. He even got to go ice skate which he has never done. There are so many first things he experienced there and really enjoyed his summer. It was so good to hear him tell me all that he was doing, he sounded so happy every time we talked.

Gage is an adorable eight-year-old boy that loves to play outdoors and go swimming. He lives in an area where he is not able to safely play outside with other neighborhood children. Like most young boys, he is full of energy and needs an opportunity to be physically and socially active on a daily basis. I requested funds to cover the fees for the child to attend the YMCA North Pinellas day camp for the summer. Attending camp has given Gage the opportunity to interact with children in a positive and safe environment and make new friends. It also provided him the opportunity to take swimming lessons during camp and have vigorous outdoor play time every day during summer break. Gage loved going to day camp!

We are so greatful for this fabulous Clearwater Marine Aquarium experience. The entire Aquarium staff was so kind and helpful. My children learned so much. To my pleasant surprise, my 6yr old Ezra’s curiosity dominated the invertebrate presentation with such interesting questions. Bio Mom and Grandma to my 6 yr old Laura and 7yr old Alexa had a visit with their children they will treasure. My 7yr old Julian was in love with the Nicolas and named his stuffed Dolphin Nicolas. The children are still talking about the everything at the Aquarium. They all enjoyed every minute of it. With the generous gift card from the Angels group, each child bought a something for themselves and a sister or brother who could not be with them.

Again, thank you for an experience we will never forget. Erin

Healthy Start PAT+ started working with a mom in September. She had her baby and was having trouble feeding the baby. Mom was struggling to breastfeed and was supplementing with formula. The baby has a dairy allergy that was discovered at a doctors appointment. Thanks to Angels, we were able to provide a breast pump to help this mom continue breastfeeding. Thank you to Angels Against Abuse for all you do for PAT+!!

ATTENTION READERS

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our readers for taking time to read our monthly newsletters. Although they are a bit lengthy, it is our hope to keep all of our Members, Angels and Supporters in the loop of the tremendous ways we are changing lives. In order to make it easy for all of our readers, I will put all the “NEW” News at the beginning of our Newsletters, and continue with the monthly “UPDATES” of existing news. That way, for those of you that are too busy to read the whole newsletter, you can stay connected on any NEW news that is happening with the Angels. Any newcomers will have the opportunity to not only learn more about the Angels but get acquainted with the many programs we provide to our children. This is my way of trying to make all of our readers happy to be a part of what we do for the children and families in our community.

OUR MEETINGS ARE EXTREMELY INFORMATIVE SO PLEASE TRY TO ATTEND
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER….

The Angels had another FANTASTIC and INFORMATIVE meeting in July! Everyone walked away knowing more than when they walked through the door. What the Angels do is extremely important and the more we know the better we can be for the children we serve. Many of our community partners attend these meetings and share their knowledge to help keep us informed.

Gloria will be one of our speakers at our August Meeting!

Let’s Get Outside of the Foster Care Box
—by Gloria West Lawson
Springtime! always a reminder that it’s never too late to start fresh. When it comes to foster care, a phrase I hear a lot is “The system is broken.” I say how can it be broken when it’s never worked?! It’s not enough to fix the system; it needs a fresh start. As it exists, foster care is a failed social experiment which is harming children. Foster care needs a reboot. Research suggests that most children fare better in their own toxic families than in foster care. Part of the overhaul of foster care must include the elimination of the re-victimization of children by the very system created to protect them.
Fostering Hope is working to change our current foster care through innovative ideas designed to protect and nurture children. One such program is Foster Care First Responders, trained individuals who help children with the emotional trauma of coming into foster care. Interested in becoming a first responder? Call me. To learn more about the work we are doing in the Tampa Bay area, please visit our website. To help us FOSTER HOPE, by creating a compassionate system, please support our work with a donation.
Gloria can be reached at: (727) 688-5328 or
[email protected]

Krista Shafer will tell us more about this program at our August Meeting

Better Together is based out of Southwest Florida (Naples/Fort Myers). Better Together is expanding throughout the state of Florida, including Pinellas/Pasco Counties. We have served families in the Southwest Florida region and have been able to prevent over 3,100 children from entering the foster care system over the last 5 years. Our mission is to radically reduce the number of children entering foster care by providing parents with a safety net for their children in times of crisis. We connect them to vetted local volunteer families that can temporarily care for their children, to allow parents to get back on their feet. Families facing homelessness, medical emergencies, willing to seek addiction treatment but lack care for their children and other crisis situations and lack support of someone to help. Our referrals come from community partners, including the Department of Children and Families, hospitals, Shelters, treatment facilities and Schools. Please click on the below buttons to learn more.

The Angels have been busy little bees these past few weeks purchasing uniforms, pre-assembled backpacks, additional school supplies, tablets and anything needed to help make the kiddos we assist enjoy getting back to school. The Angels wish all of our children a happy and healthy 2021/2022 school year. Stay safe and healthy and make your parents proud and most of ALL be NICE to one another!

THANK YOU KIWANIS CLUB

Thank You Kiwanis for once again making smiles on the faces of children who often have little to smile about.

August 1st 2021 the Kiwanis Club is giving children a day of memories, a day of Hope and Smiles that fill the room of the Downtown St Petersburg Coliseum.

On behalf of Angels Against Abuse, Inc. Thank You for keeping this legacy we started alive….

Sandy Kearney, Founder
Angels Against Abuse

THANK YOU FROM FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN

As school is getting ready to start in August the children look forward to getting at least 2 new school uniform outfits and school supplies from the Angels Against Abuse. They know in their hearts that they will at least have 2 new outfits for school as well as a new book back full of school supplies. This year at Friends of the Children Tampa Bay will celebrate the achievement of all 53 of our youth for being promoted to the next grade. We feel extra special this year due to COVID and the battles the youth had to go through with virtual learning and WIFI services. But because of the Angels and their support with making sure that our youth had either tablets or laptops many of our youth were successful in the virtual learning area. We have 3 youth that will be moving from Elementary to middle and we have 2 youth that will be going to high school in August. Because of the Angels all of our kids have uniforms and backpacks full of school supplies and we will be giving the laptops that were donated by the Angels to our new High School youth. We want to say thank you Sandy and the Angels for your love and support of our program. We will have pictures of our Achievement program showing the youth receiving the items donated from the Angels.

Thanks Again Sandy and the Angels

Sincerely,
Friends of the Children Tampa Bay

Another BabyCAT success story.

This father was referred to the BabyCAT program with allegations of domestic violence which lead to the removal of his daughter. This dad has been engaged in the program and fully participating since the inception of the case. He meets with his Counselor twice a week and with his intensive case manager. He has good sessions consistently, attends weekly staffings, advocates for his daughter and asks staff great questions. He has learned new skills as an individual and as a single dad from his nurturing parenting curriculum. He maintains a full-time job and now owns his own home and has made great progress towards completing his treatment plan goals and continues to work his case plan tasks. A contributing factor to his success is his dedication and commitment to partner with all of the professionals assigned to his case.

The BabyCAT team considers this dad and his daughter a success because of the positive changes made and the interventions being implemented in the home.”

Original story:
C. lives with a non relative caregiver. She has severe trauma from being in foster care for more that 70% of her life and suffering through multiple failed placements and separation from siblings during the process. This caregiver had custody of Chelsey’s sister and still does and knew that as a child life specialist, she could provide better care for her. The caregiver has gotten all the needed therapies and services set up for C. to ensure there is not another failed placement. C. has been stable in this home for more than 6 months and is doing great but there are good days and bad days. C. loves gymnastics and previously participated for a few months. She is asking to take lessons at Bayside Gymnastics during Spring Break. We believe this would be a great outlet for her and a confidence builder.

Follow up on C:
C. re-entered care when she was removed after allegations of abuse from a grandparent who had permanent guardianship. She loves her new caregivers who hope to be able to adopt her but she really hates going to day care after school. Her GAL requested payment for a gymnastics camp for spring break. C. had a blast all week at camp and discovered that not only does she love gymnastics, she’s good at it too! Since then her caregivers have enrolled her in gymnastics classes on Saturdays. She feels better, her self-esteem is improving AND she has a new way to help her cope with all the trauma she has experienced in her young life.

Original Story:
S. has been living in a foster home since July 2020 after being in a group home with older siblings since April 2017. S. has told me that she needs new sweatpants to feel more comfortable than wearing jeans at school. It seems that she is body shy. She would like a few pairs of sweatpants in medium

Follow up on S:
S. was removed from her home in April 2017 due to neglect. She was originally placed with her two siblings at a group home in Pinellas but is now in a foster home in Pasco. She is very body conscious and her new school in Pasco does not have the multi-racial environment that she is used to. S. felt so excited to get her sweatpants. As a 15 year old girl clothes are really important to her. It may seem like vanity but GALF coming through with a modest request for her clothing makes her feel that people are there for her. And I feel additionally proud to be a GAL to help her with her request. Big thanks to GALF and the donor!

Our Newest Little Angel JOURNEE
Who is now 4 Months
has some IMPORTANT NEWS to share

The Angel Center is really getting busy as I welcome our guests through the doors. Mom is really working hard and everyone loves the Angel Visitation Center! Yeah ANGELS!

When you walk through the doors of the Angel Center, what you see is a smile on all the faces!

The Angel’s Visitation Center has been a huge success lately now that COVID barriers are finally of the past! Visitations are picking up and we even have a waiting list for certain time frames which is absolutely amazing! I am so proud of how far the Angel Center has come and I adore this journey that we are embarking on to helping families reunite.

This facility has gained so much good reputation and the children just love visiting their parents in such a calming and nurturing environment. We offer visitation bags to children on their first visit and they are so appreciative for such a great gift.
I love to see the looks all everyone’s faces as they enter the center. They are always in shock at how clean, comforting, and safe it is which really melts my heart.

The center went from 16 hours per week just two months ago to 60 hours per week now. This is a huge jump in such a small amount of time. Other organizations even utilize our facility, such as ‘Friend’s for the children,’ to conduct their monthly board meeting in our learning center. Our resource room has also been a huge hit as families have been getting hygiene and baby products to help them get and/or stay on their feet. It’s just been such a blessing to see the Angel Center flourish so quickly during a great time of need from our community at this time!

Angels Making A Difference…

The Angels had a FANTASTIC and INFORMATIVE meeting in June! Everyone was so excited to be back on track and learn about what successes have occurred over the past year plus! April Lott, CEO/President of Directions for Living gave us an amazing report on the First Five/BabyCat Program and its amazing success for children at the pre-k to 8 age group. Families are being turned around and children saved from the child welfare system changing lives for generations to come. Congratulations April for your passion for children and Hooray for the Angels to partner with such an amazing organization.

We hope all the wonderful dads had a fantastic Father’s Day! It is our honor to recognize those dads who make such a difference in their children’s lives and in many cases have to be both the mom and dad to their kids!

Many times dads are overlooked for their role in a child’s life since so much focus is on the moms, but for those dads that are both a mom and a dad to their child, you are appreciated. I have a very good friend that has advocated for his child since she was born and he finally prevailed Thanks my friend for being vigilant.

FINALLY, SOMEONE LISTENED!

Speaking of amazing dads, I would like to congratulate and thank this amazing dad for keeping his little girl safe. After a six year battle, someone finally listened and he prevailed in a system that is flawed. His story would bring tears to your eyes, but the end result is what matters. This child is on a healthy journey thanks to the efforts of this amazing dad!

FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN

The Angels are proud to once again partner with the Friends of the Children Mentoring Program in 2021. Thank you for your tireless effort and commitment to dedicate 12 1/2 years to children who need guidance and a mentor to guide them through life’s many challenges. These amazing individuals are changing lives for generations to come and the Angels are proud to be a part of their mission.

The Angel Center is on a “WAIT LIST” and we are so excited. Hearing the sounds of children interacting with their parents is music to our ears! Everyone coming to the Center is thrilled that things are getting back to normal and our Angel Center is the place to make visits happen! Special Thanks you to our Community Partners for getting the word out about our Center and getting us to a “wait list” status. If you have not visited our Angel Center, Please do; just let us know and we will get you a tour.

We Are Back to Normal

On behalf of Friends of the Children, we would like to thank Angels Against Abuse for making the Angel Center available for our monthly meetings. A SUCESS STORY
FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN

Dominic was one of the most shy kids I had ever met 7 years ago. He literally thought everyone that looked at him was talking about him. He has since been exposed to so much and has overcome his fears slowly.

Although he has some family nearby, his caregiver was the only person that was going to watch him perform at his band event. The Friend wouldn’t miss this for the world. He performed amazing in front of a fairly full gym. The flute section in which he plays was front and center. It was quite a night.

ANOTHER SUCCESS STORY
FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN

Joshua was held back a grade when he first came into the program due to his reading level and scores and the help of the Sandy and Angels with getting the youth a tablet and with the purchase of different books. While mentoring Joshua to help him get his reading levels up to his accurate grade level, I used the tools that his teacher had given me, the books that the Angels purchased and websites that enhanced his reading. Last school year Joshua was promoted to the 8th grade during the summer because he took a test that would allow him to be promoted to the 8th grade instead of going to the 7th and he is now in his correct grade because of his resilience. Joshua is now in his correct grade and is doing exceptionally well. Joshua also enjoys playing soccer and competing in chess. He will be one of our 1st High Schoolers next school year.

A HUGE Congratulations to YOU for your vigilence and passion to see this through. Children all across our community and beyond will have HOPE for a better tomorrow thanks to YOU…

A Message from April Lott,
President & CEO
Directions for Living

“Elias was referred to the BabyCAT team by his school in December 2020 due to having behavioral concerns in the classroom. The child has also experienced trauma including observing domestic violence and relocating to new homes several times.

Since participating and engaging with the Counselor, Priscila and Case Manager, Samantha, Elias has made progress including, he has decreased negative behaviors in the classroom, he has learned new skills, he is asking for a break when he is getting upset, he is using deep breathing activities, and he is using relaxation skills to prevent further incidences in his classroom. Elias’s grades have improved, his school attendance is excellent, he is advancing to the next grade and now communicating more effectively with his mother and staff.
The Counselor and Case Manager have advocated for Elias’s needs including the behavioral modification plan in order to foster the child’s success. The Case Manager and Counselor have also linked the family to community resources as well as assisted the mom with communicating her concerns in order to benefit her family and their needs.

A contributing factor for Elias’s success is his mother’s partnership with all professionals. The mother partners with the school, she communicates with the Counselor and Case Manager, and she attends meetings with staff and the school each week. The mom has invested her time and efforts into the change process and demonstrates her ability to meet her child’s emotional and educational needs. The mom has engaged, demonstrated change, and is resilient.

The BabyCAT team considers Elias and his family a success because of the positive changes made and the interventions being implemented in the home and school. Thank you Angels Against Abuse for being the secret sauce to this little ones success.

Opportunity Outreach
Dream, Believe, Succeed!
WE HAVE ALREADY STARTED FILLING REQUESTS

GUARDIAN AD LITEM
DREAM it, BELIEVE it, SUCCEED

The Angels are so proud to once again work with the Guardian ad Litem Foundation to help address the needs of the children they advocate for 24/7. With visitations down due to COVID, and schools being closed for almost all of 2020 and the beginning of 2021, there are requests for these children to try and live as normal a life as possible and give them a sense of normalcy in their lives. The Opportunity Outreach Program is a direct benefit to children allowing them to have real, “normal” kid experiences. These funds help to make sure that they can participate in the school, church, and/or community activities that they are interested in without putting the burden of funding on the child or foster parent. Some examples of funding requests include:

  • Registration fees for school sports and the equipment needed to participate.
  • Going on a school field trip or church/YMCA outing
  • Going to homecoming or prom and purchasing a dress or suit
  • Getting a bike
  • Being able to purchase school pictures
  • Taking dance, karate, or music lessons after school
  • Covering the cost of a cake for a birthday party
  • Attending summer camp
  • Taking swim lessons

This program will give Hope to children who often have little to smile about. It is the little things that could potentially turn a child’s life around, and if one wish granted can make a difference in their lives, the Angels will make that happen!

YMCA Summer Camp

G’s Story
G. lives with his paternal grandmother in an apartment. Both parental rights were terminated. Prior to living with his grandmother, he lived with his paternal grandfather and his parents. G. lives in an apartment complex where he is not able to play outside without direct supervision. The apartment complex has signs posted that state children are not permitted to play in the parking lot areas. He does not have friends nearby that he could play with over the summer. G. lives with his paternal grandmother as his caregiver. She is on a fixed income and cannot afford to cover the full cost of summer camp tuition fees. This request is to fund a summer day camp at YMCA.

Birthday gift: Phone case and headphones

A GAL Request
GAL would like to purchase a birthday gift for high school teen child living in group home.

Summer Camp

L’s Story
L. is currently placed at Educational Advantage. She is in her 2nd year there and doing quite well. She attends school regularly and wants to go to college when she graduates from High School next school year. She is a junior and her grades are good. She has just gotten her Learner’s permit to learn to drive and plans to stay in Foster Care until she graduates from High School then go in to PEES. She has been consistent in what she wants and shows quite a bit of maturity in thinking things through for herself and making good choices since she has been at Educational Advantage. L. has stated for quite a while that she would like to take piano lessons. Eckerd is helping find lessons, as GAL I am working to find her a keyboard.

UPDATE
L is a mature, smart, ambitious young women who lives in a group home after being removed from her mother’s care for the second time, three years ago. She gets good grades and looks forward to graduating high school and then going to college. L has always wanted to learn to play the piano but due to being in and out of foster care, there was never an opportunity. Thanks to the partnership between Guardian ad Litem Foundation of Tampa Bay and Angels Against Abuse, L received a keyboard and is teaching herself to play the piano using you tube videos! Playing the keyboard has been a wonderful outlet for L—giving her a healthy way to process her emotions, while learning a long-desired skill.

A Bicycle Request

D’s Story
D. needs a bicycle. He is in middle school and his family is unable to meet this need. He did not receive a birthday gift from his family due to financial hardships and fact he was in a group home. He is now placed with his grandparents and has no age appropriate sports equipment or “toys” that will keep him active and encourage him to be physically active for outdoors. This is a great opportunity to help him start fresh with an item that all youth his age enjoy owning and riding now that he is moving from a group home to his grandmothers.

Nintendo Switch

L’s Story
L was abandoned by his grandmother and placed into foster care; it was determined that L. suffered from sensory disorders and developmental disabilities. L. was given a Nintendo Switch lite by his aunt for his birthday in 2020. He utilized this game system to help him with his sensory issues and his switch is also sentimental because his aunt gave it to him on a special day. It was his birthday and coincidentally the day the judge granted the GAL motion to place him back in the care of his family. When L. was moved back into care in January, he insisted that he take the switch with him to his Foster home. The aunt tried to stop him but L. suffers from major explosive episodes so she allowed him to take it. Shortly after his placement another foster child in the home, stole it then moved out of the home and it’s gone. This has been an issue for L. and her perseverates on it every weekend when he visits his aunt. The aunt is a single mother, newly divorced, and hasn’t yet received any child support from her ex husband and asked for help in replacing the switch

Swim Lessons

T’s Story
T. was sheltered in March 2021 due to the mother mental health. She is not placed with any of her other 4 siblings. T. is doing very well in her placement, but doesn’t get to see her siblings or her mother very often. Although she is doing well, she is struggling being away from her family. T. is starting to open up at her placement, and discussing things that she has seen in her life. The current foster parents have a pool, and being in Florida the child is around water regularly. The child would benefit from swim lessons to learn water safety, and understand how fun and dangerous water can be. The child enjoys water, but needs to learn how to be around it safely. Hopefully participating in swimming can get her mind off the other things going on.

Summer Camp

Their Story
These 3 children were placed with their Paternal Grandmother due to neglect, drug abuse and domestic violence. The parental rights were terminated. Grandmother works full time, as does her spouse. They are now on a limited income after taking in and offering full support to their 3 grandchildren. The children can not be left home alone and no other relative or daycare system is available while the grandparents work. The summer camp will allow them the space, time and energy they need to express themselves while out of school.

The impact that Angels is having on these kids lasts long after the check has been cut. Thank you for seeing the value of brining these opportunities to children in the dependency system and helping to give them an outlet to grow.

Throughout the year when we receive requests for the moms or their babies, we address those needs quickly to make sure their needs are met.

Here is a great story from Noelle Chase

GINA’S GOAL IS TO FILL
650 TUMMIES IN 2021
That’s AMAZING…

Thank You Gina for all you do in our community to take care of the hunger needs of children and families. YOU are amazing and the Angels are so happy to partner with you!

Please Mark your calendars for August 21st, 2021, the famous Kind Mouse Mousequerade! The Angels are proud to be a partner with The Kind Mouse and be a part of assisting with this terrible pandemic of hunger that we have in our community.

Thank you Gina for all you do!

CONGRATULATIONS DISABILITY ACHIEVEMENTS ON YOUR SUCCESS

WILL BE HAPPENING

OCTOBER 22ND 2021

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You…

for those of you that are re-sponsoring!

Friday, October 22nd 2021 is the date for our Annual Blue Ribbon Gala. I would like to thank each of you that have been a support for our Gala and also thank you for your patience throughout this past year and a half for the changes we have had to make. Since the Blue Ribbon event is our only awareness event that allows us to sustain the programs we provide to our community partners as well as educate our community on the programs we provide, it is important that we find a way to make it happen. Our Angel Awareness Event, the BRG, will not only be an amazing event as always, but t will be a celebration of being together and getting life back to normal, while raising funds to touch the lives of the children and youth we advocate for throughout the year. Only YOU can make it happen!

COVID has tested all of us but we are ALL stronger than ever to have survived such a challenging time, but imagine how difficult it has been for children who have already suffered so much and have had to overcome so many of life’s obstacles. We HOPE you will join us October 22nd 2021 and help us make a difference and celebrate our ability to adapt to change! Again, thank you for your patience and understanding through the many changes we have had to make due to COVID guidelines.

If you have already purchased your tickets, we hope to see you! If you have not, please follow the links above and purchase your ticket or table for a beautiful evening that we planned just for YOU. If you are unable to attend, you can make a donation directly on our website to make a difference in the a child’s life.

For those of you that have already donated, Thank You from the bottom of our hearts!

A story to share from Byron Presley about the true meaning of Family Values…

I wanted to share just a bit on what one of the Friends and I would call a success story. One of the main aspects of FOTC is truly relationship building with our youth and community . We are committed to providing a sense of belonging to the children that may have never experienced that. The Angels have really brought this to life for our youth.

This past week, the Friend had to cancel a couple appointments with his youth due to a family emergency. He shared with his kids that his 4 year old daughter broke her arm in the middle of the week and needed surgery immediately. Of course, they were all understanding, as were the caregivers.

A few days after the cancellation, one of his youth borrowed his mother’s phone to call and check up on him and his daughter!!!! Another one called him through skype on the tablet that the Angel’s provided. We thought that the Friends were the ones who supposed to be the one looking out for their youth? Ken stated that “It was very heartwarming to know that my boys share the same concern over me, as I have over them.” It may not seem like much to the standard observer, but these 2 young men has struggled with connections in the past due to the broken connection from their birth-parents. Through our consistency and genuine care for my youth, they KNOW that they are a part of our FAMILY. Thanks Sandy and Angels for continuing to help our program and the youth that are in FOTCTB.

The BabyCAT team considers Elias and his family a success because of the positive changes made and the interventions being implemented in the home and school. Thank you Angels Against Abuse for being the secret sauce to this little ones success.

Summer Camp

T’s Story.
T. is a precocious child, very engaging and verbal. He is very smart, loves to read and play video games. He has adapted very well in his placement. His one year old half-sister is also in this placement and she and T. are very attached and bonded to the foster parents. Thanks to the foster parents T. has really experienced normalcy in a family like environment and has frequent and regular contact with the foster family’s extended family that T. perceived to be his family (he calls them aunties, uncles and cousins). The parents have rarely visited and their whereabouts were unknown until recently when the father was arrested for several serious felonies and the mother’s location is now again unknown. T. would benefit greatly by interacting with other children and doing new and exciting things in camp. He loves learning and is very athletic.

Summer Camp

B’s story:
B. is an energetic soon to be 11 yr old boy. This is his 2nd time out of the home. He has never been to camp before. GAL would like to see him have fun, release some energy, socialize and just be a kid. He presently lives with his maternal grandfather in a small RV where there are no children around. This camp has martial arts 3 x per week, sports, field trips twice weekly, swimming which I think all would benefit him for socialization, meeting new friends, a chance to do things he wouldn’t otherwise get a chance to do plus someone to do them with.

Summer Track and Field Team Participation

A’s Story
A. and his siblings entered care in July 2017 and lived with their neighbors who found them all hard to manage. The children went and lived with the neighbor’s adult daughter and her husband. After a short time, this placement broke down due to A’s brother’s aggressive behaviors (which scared the caregivers. A. and his brother have been separated ever since. A. bounced around after a stable (and very strict) placement and then was physically disciplined in a foster home and was removed. This led to more bouncing around until he landed in his current placement in March 2020. He has done well there. The current FPs are AMAZING with A. and work with him on his behaviors and are loving towards him.

The FPs would like A. to join the Track Club near them for the summer. The club meets for practice on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday with meets once or twice a month. The practices are 1.5 hours long through the entire summer.

A. has PTSD and takes a psychotropic med. He has a lot of energy and a track club would be wonderful for him! A. is only 8 and due to COVID, hasn’t participated in much formal activities while in this foster home. There are other boys in the home who would participate as well.

Beach Towels For Birthday

C&S’s Story
C. and S. are in an adoptive placement with their Bio mom’s step sister. They seem to be thriving in this new placement. They are having REAL birthday parties for the first time ever. Their birthdays are within two weeks of each other. C. is having a Fortnight waterslide party and S. is having a mermaid waterslide party. I’d like to give them each a new beach towel.

The impact that Angels is having on these kids lasts long after the check has been cut. Thank you for seeing the value of brining these opportunities to children in the dependency system and helping to give them an outlet to grow.

The Angels & The Kind Mouse Have Teamed Up!
Angel Baby Mouse Nibbles Program
23 Baby Bags Filled

Thank you Gina, The Kind Mouse for Partnering with the Angels

The Kind Mouse & Angels Against Abuse, Angel Baby Mouse Nibbles Program is a HUGE SUCCESS and the Kind Mouse and Angels are very excited to partner together to provide assistance to these precious little angels! These baby bags are filled with essentials to provide a start for infants that will be distributed to our community partners to assist with baby needs and urgent items for babies when removed or in a homeless situation. In May we received a call from Directions for Living that they needed assistance for the Angel Baby Bags. The request came to the Angels and the next day 23 bags personalized with the baby’s initials and age was filled and delivered. Thank you Kim Bauer and Ashley Tominus for making this happen! These baby bags include items that will make a difference until they are placed with relatives or in foster care. The bags will include pre-mixed formula or baby food depending on the age of the infant, diapers, wipes, baby wash, diaper rash ointment, clothing based on age and gender of infant, washcloths, bibs, baby book, pacifier, rattles, and baby bottles.

The Angels received a request in May for a Barber’s Chair and Booster Seat to make it easier to wash the children’s hair when they are removed. This chair has made it so much easier on the CPI’s and here is a thank you from one of rhe Family Support Workers with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

Nayana Garcia told me that she was excited to have our new Hairdresser-Lice Chair and very thankful for your donation. Nayana provided me with some feedback on how this chair has made a positive impact here.

From Nyana- I am not sure if I am the “Lice Fairy”, but I’ve gotten many lice cases at CPID. Some of the hardest have been cases with siblings were treatments had to be completed before children go to foster placement, and most of them have been at night time.

I wanted to share two of my most memorable experiences, and let me tell you from the bottom of my heart that your donation will be used regularly, and we appreciate your gift.

A few years ago, we worked on a case with a child who had special needs. The child was around 4 years old at that time, no language and covered in lice. The child was so small that it was very difficult to keep child in a regular chair, so we improvised and used our high chair for treatment. I don’t think it was comfortable for the child, but it helped us doing the job. My supervisor and I worked together combing nits. We probably were there more than an hour. The hardest part was to wash the hair, when one of us had to hold the child and the other washed the treatment. It was a long and stressful night. I saw so much lice that my hair itched when I went to bed.

Another experience occurred this year, when I was on call and received a case at 2:00 am with 4 children all with lice. The kids were well behaved and did great during their lice treatment, but it was very uncomfortable and difficult to comb hair on our regular chairs. A little one was also included in the group making the job a little bit more difficult. I finished the treatments in the morning around 8:00 am, My coworker came to my rescue and helped me with the last kid and other things we needed to do for the case.

I’m happy to have a chair that can adjust to children height and is comfortable for them. A chair that can make them feel special, prevent meltdowns and make children feel safe because they are sitting in something made for someone their size.

Thank you so much for your donation!

Please Mark your calendars for August 21st, 2021, the famous Kind Mouse Mousequerade! The Kind Mouse never wants a child to go to bed hungry and thanks to Gina Wilkins, the Founder & President, Children in our community get their little tummies filled, but without the support of our community, The Kind Mouse would not be able to accomplish this.

The Angels are proud to be a partner with The Kind Mouse and be a part of assisting with this terrible pandemic of hunger that we have in our community.

Thank you Gina for all you do!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KIND MOUSE ON YOUR 9TH BIRTHDAY OF FILLING LITTLE TUMMIES ACROSS OUR COMMUNITY! THE WORLD IS A BETTER PLACE BECAUSE OF YOU!

650 TUMMIES IN 2021
That’s AMAZING…

Thank You Gina for all you do in our community to take care of the hunger needs of children and families. YOU are amazing and the Angels are so happy to partner with you!

HEALTHY START PAT+ MISSION STATEMENT

Healthy Start PAT focuses on reducing infant mortality and morbidity rates in the community by providing comprehensive case management and support services to pregnant and parenting substance abusing women with children ages 0-18 months. The Angels have partnered with them for the past several years through our Christmas Giving and our Angel Assistance Programs. Throughout the year when we receive requests for the moms or their babies, we address those needs quickly to make sure their needs are met.

Here is a great story from Noelle Chase
We have a family that finally was able to move from a hotel to a rental house. She has been with us since April 2020, had her baby boy in November and we helped her get into the house this month. Angels provided her with a baby bath, bottles, baby clothes and lots of other essentials when the baby was born. This family is now very stable and without Angels help, we would not have been able to help this family as much as we did

BLUE RIBBON GALA

NEW DATE

PLEASE CHECK YOUR CALENDARS

FRIDAY OCTOBER 22ND 2021

PLEASE SEE FULL DETAILS BELOW

A NEW DATE FOR OUR BLUE RIBBON GALA

As all of you know, our April 10th 2020 Annual Blue Ribbon Gala was postponed several times in 2020. The Angels felt for sure that the April 10th 2021 date would work, but unfortunately COVID is still standing in the way so we are now looking at Friday, October 22nd 2021 as the date for our Annual Blue Ribbon Gala. I would like to thank each of you that have been a support for our Gala and also thank you for your patience throughout this past year for the changes we have had to make. Since the Blue Ribbon event is our only awareness event that allows us to sustain the programs we provide to our community partners, it is important that we find a way to make it happen. The Angels feel that later this year will allow us sufficient time to work through COVID and have an amazing event that will be a celebration of being together while raising funds to touch the lives of the children and youth we advocate for throughout the year.

Every dollar we receive goes directly to one of our programs that make a difference in the lives of the child. Last year tested all of us and we are ALL stronger than ever to have survived such a challenging time but imagine how difficult it has been for these vulnerable children who have already suffered so much. We HOPE you will join us October 22nd 2021 and help us make a difference and celebrate our ability to adapt to change! Again, thank you for your patience and understanding through the many changes we have had to make due to COVID guidelines.

JOIN US OCTOBER 22ND, 2021 FOR A SPECIAL CELEBRATION OUR
ANNUAL BLUE RIBBON GALA

If you have already purchased your tickets, we hope to see you! If you have not, please follow the links below and purchase your ticket or table for a beautiful evening that we planned just for YOU. If you are unable to attend, you can make a donation directly on our Facebook page or our website www.angelsagainstabuse.org to make a difference in the a child’s life.

For those of you that have already donated, Thank You from the bottom of our hearts!

Something to make you SMILE
One of the children I Mentor
by Byron Pressley, Program Director FOTC

I often look for big successes or want to see our kids achieve something big to be considered a success. But sometimes goals are small and successes add up over time. The truth is, many of our kids’ successes are small and they may need those successes a hundred times before they can move onto something bigger. The wins can be in the little moves forward, even if they take steps backwards at times, if the overall movement is forward, we are achieving our goals.

One of my girls struggles in reading. She can read, just slower than everyone else and gets stuck sounding out words in her head, so there can be long pauses, sometimes making it difficult to understand what she is reading.

By her teacher and myself advocating for her, she was able to get extra time during test taking, passed her 3rd grade FSA, and is improving in her reading skills during 4th grade. She is still slow during reading, but continues to improve. The other day on our outing she said she likes to read. That was both surprising and a joy for me to hear. But again, success is sometimes in the small moves forward. Together, because of the Angels help with getting us tablets for our youth, we are reading a chapter book about a boy who also struggles with reading, and should finish by the end of the school year and look forward to choosing a book for the summer. Earlier this year, we had goals for her to read independently, but she wouldn’t read at home. We readjusted our goal and now just read together. This also allows us to discuss what we are reading to develop fluency and comprehension. My hope is that she will start to create a desire to read independently and will begin to ask herself questions to make sure she is understanding what she is reading. For her to say she likes to read, to me, is a success.

Directions for Living

“It is so heartwarming when we receive a gift from a generous supporter of Directions for Living that allows us to say “yes” to one more family or deserving adult in need. Thank you Angels Against Abuse for being a champion for children in our BabyCAT Program. This program was created to assist children in their first 5 years of life that have been identified by a teacher at one of our partner elementary and early learning schools as experience a mental, emotional, or behavior issues that is preventing them from being successful in their learning environment. Many of these kiddos are at-risk of out-of-home care due to domestic violence between caregivers substance issues in their home or other stressful situations. Thanks to your generous support to DFL we are working towards our vision of thriving children, Empowered adults and Strong families! Organizations like the Angels provide vital support that helps bring out BabyCAT families back together. OPPORTUNITY OUTREACH SUCCESS STORIES
Thank You Angels
Erin Authier
Executive Director
Guardian ad Litem Foundation of Tampa Bay

Original request:
K, Middle School boy.
K. is a sweet teenage boy that has been longing for normalcy and permanency. Due to being in a group home for the majority of his time in care, he has been unable to participate in extracurricular activities.. He is now in a wonderful foster home that may result in permanency. K. used to play baseball years ago prior to coming into Foster care. Since he has spent the past few years in a group home where extracurricular activities were not an option, he hasn’t been able to play. K. now lives in a wonderful foster home and has just joined a baseball team. Due to the years he was unable to play, he’s feeling extremely insecure with his abilities. With a few extra lessons to get him up to speed, his confidence will improve, as will his enjoyment of the season.

Update:
K. and his two siblings came into care after years of neglect and substance abuse by their parents. After bouncing around to multiple placements, K. is now in a wonderful foster home where he is finally able to have a more normal teenage life. Prior to shelter, K. had played baseball and really showed potential. With a break of several years, he lacked confidence due to feeling behind the other kids. Thanks to your support, K took hitting lessons prior to the start of the season to get him up to speed for the level he now plays at. I’m happy to share that not only is K. physically playing baseball better, but more importantly it has helped his self-esteem to be more evenly matched with his teammates. He looks forward to practices and games and is really thriving!

Update:
We received the sweetest update on C from his guardian ad litem. C. is a middle school aged boy who has been in the dependency system for a few years and has struggled with ADHD. His GAL and caregivers were looking for a therapeutic outlet to help C. work through his feelings and gain a new skill. They found music therapy and thanks to Angels, C has been in piano lessons for a few weeks. The GAL actually just submitted a request for additional lessons for C because it is going so well, and he is getting both the music engagement and the therapy support through this activity. We are so grateful for the support of Angels in helping to make this a reality for C! Below is the note we received from this GAL:

“Piano lessons are making a huge impact in C’s life as he chose his own teacher from the website and talks to her about personal issues as well as enjoys the learning and music therapy. He has been taking lessons now for a few weeks and enjoys it so much he wants it to continue. We are so thankful for the ability to provide him this experience.

Thank you!”

Healthy Food Request .
S. would like to receive gift cards that he could use at local grocers to augment the food supplied by his group home. He is interested in gaining a little more control over his diet (and honestly this would be something else in his life he could have a little more control over). At 14 he’s eating everything in sight, just because that’s what you do at 14. On top of that, due to his homelessness prior to placement in the Group Home, he was also likely under nourished when he arrived at the house.

Piano Keyboard
L. is currently placed at Educational Advantage.
A Yamaha Keyboard 76 key keyboard can be purchased on line through Walmart.

One Year of Karate
Plus Gear & Uniform & Registration
V. has been in and out of foster care for over four years, yet she remains a bubbly and creative little kiddo. She is currently in karate lessons, which she absolutely loves, but the foster mother requested financial support to continue it.
V. has been taking karate for several months and loves it. Every time the GAL visits her, she demonstrates her latest moves and makes the GAL learn the new forms. She packs an impressive kick

Camp
C. is living in a therapeutic foster home. He was in his original placement for 9+ months, but interrupted due to a FP family dispute. C. was then placed on an emergency basis for 3 months but is now in what appears to be a new, permanent placement. C. would like to participate in camp this summer and the family believes it will be good for him to have the social and physical outlet

Sandbox
The boys are placed with the paternal grandfather and paternal great-grandfather. Placement is stable; however, the residence is small. Thankfully the boys are little, but they’re active! Grandpa is doing a great job of providing for the children’s basic needs. He has adjusted to having two young children which was not his plan in life and this may become permanent.
Every child likes to play in sand and the backyard of the residence (it’s part of a duplex) is shaded and perfect for a sandbox. The sandbox selected is slightly elevated so toddlers would stand at it and thus not have so much sand in their pants afterwards, but still allows for plenty of fun.

36 Bags March & April 2021
Waiting on our May Request

The Kind Mouse & Angels Against Abuse, Angel Baby Mouse Nibbles Program is a HUGE SUCCESS and the Kind Mouse and Angels are very excited to partner together to provide assistance to these precious little angels! These baby bags are filled with essentials to provide a start for infants that will be distributed to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office to assist with baby needs and urgent items for babies when removed. There has been a big increase in 2020/2021 infant removal and this is a concern that needed to be addressed. The Angels have partnered with The Kind Mouse to make sure no babies are going without! These baby bags will include items that will make a difference until they are placed with relatives or in foster care. The bags will include pre-mixed formula or baby food depending on the age of the infant, diapers, wipes, baby wash, diaper rash ointment, clothing based on age and gender of infant, washcloths, bibs, baby book, pacifier, rattles, and baby bottles. The Sheriff’s office said the average removal per month of infants right now, is around 15-17 a month. We feel this is a need that should be addressed.

TWO SISTERS BROUGHT TOGETHER – ANGELS MAKING A DIFFERENCE

The Child Protection Investigation Division recently connected two young adult sisters, one who has a newborn and a 3 year old daughter, and the other sister has a 10 month old daughter. The sisters were subjected to a lot of neglect by their own parents growing up as a result of their parents’ drug addictions. They relied on one another for support to get through their home environment growing up, and continue to do so today. They both work, one as a housekeeper and the other in sales, and reside with each other, alternating shifts to cover child care needs. The sister with the newborn had some medical complications shortly after being discharged home, and had to be readmitted to the hospital to undergo surgery. Despite life throwing them many challenges, they have persevered and done all they can to ensure their children have the love and stability they themselves did not have growing up. Thanks to the Angels, these sisters were assisted with much needed supplies to include the prepared baby bags, extra diapers, wipes and other essential items. The sisters expressed being extremely grateful for the donations, and talked about how they felt so lucky to receive the assistance. Every penny for them counts, and the items donated by Angel’s brightened their day and reaffirmed that there is so much good in the world

MONTHLY UPDATE BABYCAT FIRST FIVE PROGRAM

FIRST FIVE PROGRAM IS A HUGE SUCCESS!

BIG NEWS
298 CHILDREN’S
LIVES CHANGED FOR GENERATIONS TO COME…
Thank you April for your updates on how the little one are doing!
The Angels are very excited to be a part of changing lives for generations to come!

ONE SUCCESS STORY OF MANY OF THE DIFFERENCE THAT
The “FIRST FIVE” Baby CAT Program is making in the lives of these children!
AWESOME NEWS APRIL LOTT

In July of 2020 Baby CAT received referrals for two brothers who attend Campbell Park Elementary. These two boys were both acting out and were becoming aggressive in their classrooms. They both had been suspended from ELEMENTARY school on several different occasions.

The children had been exposed to domestic violence and extreme poverty, and their mother’s depressed mental health. In addition the family was homeless. Baby CAT staff worked with DFL’s homeless services staff and the family was housed in October 2020. In addition to the counselor the clinical consultant worked very closely with the boys and their teachers and stabilized them at school. The Baby CAT also connected mom to DFL’s psychiatric services for medication management. Mom recently got a job, the family remains stably housed and both are doing very well in school.

The Angels & The Kind Mouse Have Teamed Up!
Angel Baby Mouse Nibbles Program
20 BAGS FILLED MARCH 2021
16 BAGS FILLED APRIL 2021

The Kind Mouse & Angels Against Abuse, Angel Baby Mouse Nibbles Program is a new program that we are very excited about! These baby bags will be filled with items specifically for infants that will be distributed to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office to assist with baby needs and urgent items for babies when removed. There has been a big increase in 2020 infant removal and this is a concern that needed to be addressed.

Angels helps a little boy have Easter

A 6 year old boy was removed from his home as a result of having been physically abused. He was exposed to domestic violence and his home was environmentally hazardous, additionally he was being medically neglected by his caregivers. Despite his physical pain and the trauma of being removed from his parents, he is a great example of the resilience. On the way back to the office following the child’s removal, he told the CPI that he thought CPI and CPIT were awesome, that he loved them, and that he wanted to grow up and be just like them so he could help people the way that we were helping him.

CPID reached out to Angels in order to get him some toys while the CPI used a gift card at Walmart provided by the Angels to secure an Easter basket and plenty of candy for him to enjoy on Easter morning. The boy was extremely excited, saying “Looks like I am rich!!! That’s a lot of stuff!”

It was immensely gratifying for the CPI to be able to make Elijah’s day just a little bit better, and we are very grateful to Angels for making this possible.

Angles Baby Starter Bags:

The Angles organization has donated baby starter bags for infants that are removed and placed both with licensed care and relative/non-relative care. Each bag is filled with a stuffed animal, baby outfit, PJ’s, bibs, bottles, shampoo, wash clothes, pacifier, and a book. You will also find an assortment of food/formula and diapers that are sorted based on age and meant to supplement each bag. The bags are labeled according to age range and gender, unicorn bags are for baby girls and the puppy bags are for the baby boys.

Several of our placements have commented on how wonderful these bags are to have and how they make an emergency placement a little easier. Once caregiver commented that she was grateful she didn’t have to run to the store in a pinch to get necessities, and instead, could focus on just making sure the little one place with her was loved.

PLEASE SHOW YOUR SUPPORT!

We are looking for volunteers for all of our upcoming events. Please contact Sandy Kearney by clicking on the above link and let us know which of our upcoming events you are available to help volunteer. Please remember that all of these events benefit the Angels and your support will make a difference. Thank you for your support!

When it comes to helping others, there are no little things…the accumulation of a lot of little things isn’t little…it takes each of us to make a difference for all of us…none of us can do everything at one, but all of us can do something at once…one person can make a difference, and every person must try…
